9 pages in length. The multifaceted value of Abraham Joshua Heschel as both a lifelong advocate of Judaism and champion of human rights can easily be measured by the extent to which the scholar and activist dedicated his life to the betterment of mankind. Born in Warsaw in 1907, Heschel's deep involvement stemmed from the positive influence provided by his devout family headed by Rabbi Moshe Mordecai Heschel, a legend in his own time, as well as rebbe or leader of the Hasidic community. The influence of Hasidic rebbeim served to construct the fundamental direction of Heschel's life, one in which has had extraordinary impact upon the manner by which the Jewish community is perceived, perceives itself and can ultimately elaborate upon its cultural integrity. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
