A 4 page research paper that examines the work of American artists Samuel F.B. Morse and William Sidney Mount, who were contemporaries, but who took very different stances in regards to American art. The writer argues that an examination of Morse's "Gallery of the Louvre" (1832-33) and Mount's "The Painter's Triumph (1838) clearly demonstrates their differing pedagogical views. Morse saw the role of the artist as an interpreter of culture while Mount saw the American artist primarily as an observer of the American way of life. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
