This 95 page paper is the first part of a full length dissertation to assess whether or not there is a correlation between hedging for fuel and the profitability of airlines. The paper presents the first three chapters; the introduction, the comprehensive literature review and the methodology. The introduction outlines how and why this is important, looks at the nature of the research, presents two hypotheses and gives relevant definition. The literature review is the longest section and looks at existing theories and research that examines the impact of heading of a firm and the different influences looking at the general as well as the airline industry. The theory of constraints is also considered as a framework to be used for application to the research. The methodology presents an approach which can be used for gathering of both quantitative and qualitative data and explains the way in which the data will be analyzed.
