Staying fit by maintaining a strong and defined physique is the focal point of many people's lives, inasmuch as they consider their physical well being just as important as their mind. Indeed, the dominant culture of bodybuilding empowers individuals to appreciate the benefits of a sturdy build achieved through the natural course of exercise and diet. However, there is also a counterculture to mainstream bodybuilding that raises questions as to the mental soundness of those who take the otherwise healthy sport to a state of unnatural preoccupation by using steroids to artificially inflate their stature to what many believe is a freakish condition. At issue is how this counterculture has come to erroneously represent the dominant culture because of how steroids have been broad-brushed to include conventional bodybuilding.
