9 pages in length. The Roman Catholic Church has both stood in the way of, as well as promoted, Brazil's development and modernization. It can be argued that the Church's influence is quite considerable in that it represents the most important social institution with the singular exception of family. The significance of church interaction is undeniable; to be sure, its influence is felt at a number of social and political levels. Unlike the United States, Brazil's history had little distinction between church and state, as the two were readily intertwined. The writer discusses how nearly all of Brazil's population -- ninety percent -- are self-proclaimed Roman Catholics, so it is no surprise to learn that Catholicism is one of the most influential sources in their personal and educational lives. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
