The essay begins with some general comments about the California Mathematics Standards, including a general synopsis of what students are supposed to do by the end of the 5th grade. The focus of the Saxon math series is then explained. Comments about Saxon math from others are reported. The writer concludes that while Saxon math may fit within the general criteria of the standards, it would not be a good program to use with students who were gifted in math.
