This is a 5 page paper discussing the character of Calixta in Kate Chopin’s “The Storm”. Kate Chopin’s “The Storm” tells the story of a 19th century housewife, Calixta, who appears to be unhappy and restless within her marriage. Upon the arrival of an old flame, Alcee, during the approach of a storm, Calixta begins to feel nervous, warm and excited. Her obvious passions are reciprocated and she and Alcee have an affair that lasts the duration of the storm. The characterization of Calixta takes a surprising turn at this point however as neither Alcee nor Calixta experience guilt or remorse of their affair. Calixta, quite to the contrary is rejuvenated and elated by her new found sexuality and she carries her happiness back into her marriage; a shocking prospect in 19th century characterization of women.
