A 5 page comparative essay discussing Frederick Douglass'
Independence Day speech at Rochester and Susan B. Anthony's speech while under indictment
for illegally voting in the presidential election of 1872. In the land of freedom, Frederick
Douglass and Susan B. Anthony stand as symbolic thorns in the side of the system. As a black
man and a white woman, they were marginalized in society by virtue of birth. As articulate and
highly vocal citizens, they challenged all who would hear to examine their own comfort zones
and their own motivations. Both employed simple statement of fact plus biting sarcasm in
making their points. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
