breast cancer and an early intervention and public awareness
campaign. Knowledge, as in most cases, is a powerful weapon.
Knowledge, is the primary motivating factor for breast
self-examination (BSE). Women must know if changes occur in
their breasts and what those changes could mean. Also discussed
is the appropriate channel of communication to be used to make
the greatest impact for the targeted audience. Determining which
will work best for encouraging women to practice BSE and other
forms of early breast cancer detection, as well as for any other
public health message, requires an understanding of the most
basic characteristics of which channel of communication can be
