A 40 page paper discussing the development of an
electronic bill of materials (BOM) and then making it available to pertinent manufacturing
sites without the need for data conversion. A concurrent goal is to more fully automate
the procurement process as it applies to vendor and price searches. The project has a
global focus. It is crucial for suppliers to the automotive industry to take all steps
necessary to ensure that they keep pace with their customers, the auto makers, in reducing
design time while improving product quality and ease of manufacture. The use of an
intranet can assure that all involved can stay current with the status of any design project,
and the concurrent engineering present should work to avoid costly redesigns or delays in
arriving at a final BOM. Implementation of the electronic BOM is only part of the final
scope of the larger goal of reducing design time, but it remains a critical factor.
