Up until the late 20th century, it was believed that so few women used substances it wasn’t worth researching. The same belief was held for seniors. That assumption was in error. This paper begins by explaining convergence theory and how its role in substance use disorder among women. The essay goes on to discuss data for abuse among women, reasons it is so difficult to identify substance use in older adults, barriers women face in seeking treatment, the role of intergenerational drug use, and the influence of peers versus parents in adolescent drug use.
