It was 1928 and it was Georg von Bekesy to whom the question was posed. He was already working on adapting telephone equipment to the needs of human hearing. He began studying the cochlea, first using a mechanical model, then using the ears of animal cadavers, and finally, using the ears of human cadavers. The result was his place theory of hearing.
