A 10 page paper discussing the post-reengineering demand for middle managers. A common view of the period of great waves of downsizing and reengineering in corporate America in the late 1980s and early 1990s was that not only were the multiple layers of middle managers present in many organizations wasteful and counterproductive, but that as their primary role was to collect, monitor and convey information both up and down within the organization that they could be replaced with little interruption of continuity with organizations' management information systems (MIS). That view held for several years, but it has now become apparent that there is a human factor needed in the role formerly filled by middle management that cannot be supplied by computer application alone, with the result that middle management positions are currently the most widely available in management and also the most difficult to fill. Bibliography lists 12 sources.
