Grace, depending upon which faith one practices, is considered an inherent gift bestowed by Jesus upon man's mortality or an earned benefit that is only increased through receiving the Sacraments. While there is not single right or wrong definition, there are enough to warrant grace as being quite misunderstood. Of the myriad ways in which to describe grace, Foley (1977) notes that the most important understanding of grace is how it is 'in' people – an already-existing part of a person's character – rather than an entity one strives to acquire. In some cases, such as saying grace at mealtime to thank God for the bounty of food sitting upon one's plate, grace is an extension of tangible commodities that are inextricably interwoven into human existence.
