Gaining independence first in the early years of the 20th century, it was a member of the Soviet Union for the duration of that nation’s history. Azerbaijan has struggled economically since the collapse of communism and the Soviet Union, and it has become a favored location of Al Qaeda since Afghanistan became unavailable to the terrorist group. Azerbaijan currently is involved in a dispute with Iran, but it has been Iran with which the nation has had its most enduring diplomatic relations. The country’s geographical location, cultural history and economic hardship combine to make it of interest to US military forces.
