Jean Toomer's "Cane"

10 pages in length. Toomer's poetry is often seen as quiet and pastoral, dealing with tranquil aspects of existence. There is however, another side of his work: dealing with racial conflict between human beings. The exact manner in which Toomer reveals this conflict with respect to the northern section, one can infer that is an integral component to the author's overall mystique, utilizing such literary techniques as dialogue, imagery, as well as figurative language and pastoral interpretation. Toomer's "Cane," unarguably his greatest work, is a book of rare lyricism and poetry in which Toomer seems completely in command of both his poetic language and the vernacular he uses for dialogue. Clearly, Toomer shared the same problems associated with race as did his other literary counterparts. Upon looking at a photo of Toomer, one would see a handsome man who could very easily pass for white. Throughout his life, however, Toomer staunchly refused to specify his race when asked to do so; it could be argued that he refused to even acknowledge that he belonged to one.
