discussing the management philosophies of Max Weber, Henri Fayol, Luther Gulick and Lyndall
Urwick, then applying them to a current organizational problem at the Chubb Group. Alterations
at Chubb were motivated by late-century societal changes in that few women were part of the
workforce when all these authors were publishing their concepts. Though the problems
superficially are very different, management of them is not. The paper concludes that even with
the changes that have occurred in the past hundred years, the concepts remain valid and applicable
