Besieged with the prevalence of terrorist activity over the past decades, the United States has developed a program by which the nation's populace is aware at all times the level of potential threats that place the country under heightened awareness. Under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security, the Homeland Security Advisory System (HSAS) was developed as a means by which to identify national threat conditions based upon the changing nature of myriad criteria. This color-based system utilizes five hues to indicate the degree of proposed threat; each subsequent tick up the shade scale indicates a situation that is quickly reaching perilous levels of national safety where terrorist activity is concerned.
