Teiresias, a famous Thebian prophet, gained his special powers as a trade-off for the blindness Athena cast upon him for accidentally seeing her bathing. Now bestowed with the ability to prognosticate, Teiresias's foretelling becomes an instrumental component in many characters' lives, not the least of which were found in Oedipus and Antigone.
