A 15 page discussion of the importance of dealing with families in the treatment of schizophrenia. Observes that family reaction to a formal diagnosis can vary from acceptance of such a diagnosis and subsequent cooperation with psychiatric professionals to rejection of the diagnosis and outright belligerence when it comes time to deal with those in charge of guiding their family member to recovery. Contends that such recovery balances, however, on the ability of the therapist to direct intervention at the family unit as a whole even though only subsystems or individuals from the family are actually seen by the therapist. Concludes that family acceptance of the diagnosis of schizophrenia and their cooperation with psychiatric professionals is, therefore, critical in the treatment of this condition.
