The Geographic Information System (GIS) is employed as a means by which to determine various environmental changes that would otherwise be quite difficult – if not impossible – to track, not the least of which is utilizing remote sensing for detecting oil spills, which is defined as "the science — and art — of identifying, observing, and measuring an object without coming into direct contact with it" (Remote Sensing & Natural Hazards).
