This 30 page paper provides an overview of the issues related to the use of standardized testing in elementary education to determine grade retention and the implications. This research study asserts that the use of standardized testing, including the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) to determine whether children go on to the next grade can create considerable problems for children who are retained. The use of this standardized testing can result in test anxiety, displays of aggression and resistance to standardized tests, and children that are retained because of these tests suffer considerable from a psychological and psychosocial perspective, and the focus of school psychologists in reducing the impact of standardized tests.
