A 6 page paper discussing the manner in which follow through is expected of any order designated as “stat.” Specific definition currently lies with individual organizations. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) uses the term in the text of its standards but does not appear to specifically define it. As healthcare continues to become more narrowly defined as organizations of all types seek to resist further cost increases, it may be that JCAHO itself will define the term “stat.” Until then, it appears that individual organizations will continue to define their own use of the term.
