It can easily be argued that the defining social problem that has occupied the central focus of policymakers, scholars and the American public for the entirety of its history is race. Issues pertaining to class are generally shoved to the side and ignored as Americans subscribe to the fiction that the United States is a classless society. However, within the complex morass of characteristics that make up American culture, the ideas that people have about race and class intertwine and manifest themselves in racial and ethnic stereotypes. Examination of this social phenomena suggests that race is not solely the central issue to America’s social ills but that class also plays a pivotal role, as the two are inextricably mixed.
