The extent to which there are two types of stress (good and bad) explains why a single reaction can carry such tremendous influence on physical and mental responses. The good stress of planning a surprise birthday party or of anticipating a blind date serves to boost the body's awareness, clarity and overall function; the bad stress of constant worry, tension or trauma, however, slowly chip away at the body's defenses to keep itself healthy against such weight.
