This 5
page report discusses
Tamara Plakins Thornton's "Cultivating Gentlemen: the
meaning of country
life among the Boston elite, 1785-1860." By the opening years of
the 19th century, the wealthier "gentlemen" of the Northeast were
determined to create their own version of a "back-to-nature"
movement. To a great degree, such agrarianism was inspired by the
writings of Thomas Jefferson who believed that country people
were morally virtuous and superior to city dwellers. No
additional sources listed.
