This is a 3 page paper discussing Taoism: its history, practice, and beliefs. Tao is translated into English as “the way” or “the path” but basically cannot be defined in the traditional sense. Instead, Tao (pronounced “Dow” and Daoism) “refers to a power which envelops, surrounds and flows through all things, living and non-living. Taoism has also been referred to as “the other way” in reference to its coexistence with Confucianism within the Chinese Empire. While not radical in its concept, Taoism did offer an alternative to Confucianism. The Tao regulates natural processes and nourishes balance in the Universe” and “embodies the harmony of opposites”. Believed to be first conceived by Lao-Tse (604-531 BCE) or “Laozi”, the initial editor of the “Daodejing (Classic of the Way and its Power), Taoism became an adopted religion in 440 CE and along with Buddhism and Confucianism is considered one of the three great religions of China. Although state support for Taoism ended in 1911 in China and over the 20th century much of the Taoist heritage was destroyed, Taoism still has over 20 million followers primarily located in Taiwan but with additional followers throughout Asia and the Western world.
