Bernard Knox, in his
introduction to the play, Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, states that Oedipus
was the epitome of the 'Athenian character' as presented within the
Funeral Oration by Pericles. This 5 page paper argues that Oedipus
fulfills the majority of the requirements for the ideal Athenian,
however, his loyalty to his family denies him the status of 'the epitome
of the Athenian character'. No additional sources are listed.
