A 7 page paper offering a discussion of a small study done to
determine the relationship between locus of control (internal or external) with the practice
of following daily horoscopes. P.T. Barnum is credited with saying, "There's a sucker
born every minute." Henry Ford expanded on this in saying that there was a posterior for
every seat, though he expressed the thought in more vernacular terms. The Barnum Effect
is that which is seen to be an individual's response to a flattering or positive generalization
that can be true for many but that we believe has been designed specifically for us. The
study finds that those with an internal locus of control are less likely to place credence in
generalized daily horoscopes such as those found in daily newspapers and on the Internet.
