A 6 page paper discussing the relationships between conditions associated with menopause and also with increased periodontal disease risk. There have long been associations between periodontal disease and increased risk of cardiovascular disease; the same sort of connections exist for a relationship between decreased estrogen levels and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. There are indications that estrogen also protects against the onset of periodontal disease, and several longitudinal studies are now underway to empirically test the hypothesis that estrogen does indeed protect against such disease in postmenopausal women.
