This 20 page paper provides an overview of this issue. Over the course of the last two decades, a number of important studies have been conducted to assess the impacts of abuse and neglect on psychological development and the cyclical nature of abusive relationships. Theorists have applied psychological premises to support the notion that individuals who are abused by their parents often enter into dysfunctional relationships in adulthood, or demonstrate characteristics of abusers in their own lives. Further, some have even asserted that specific psychological disorders can be linked to the problem of abuse in early childhood. There is little challenge to the belief that child abuse and neglect has a negative impact on the development of personality characteristics and on psychosocial development in general. Bibliography lists 15 sources.
