This is a 5 page paper discussing the qualities of character found in William Bradford’s “Of Plymouth Plantation, 1620-1647” and John Winthrop’s “Model of Christian Charity, 1630”. Both men sailed to the New World to set up Christian based communities which were independent of the English Church. Bradford’s journal documents the first thirty years of the Plymouth community and in addition to promoting the ideals of equality, liberty and the following of the Gospel, also deals with issues of corruption and the nature of man. Winthrop’s “model” was written on his voyage over and provides a much more idealistic look at a model Christian community. Elements of inequality of class and differences must continue within a structure of a community, Winthrop argues, but these differences are superceded by the virtues given to men by God such as sympathy, mercy, sensitivity and charity between the classes and within the Christian community which is based on the real love between Christians.
