Health Organization and the international pharmaceutical industry
in combating them. The specialized health agency of the United
Nations, the World Health Organization or WHO was established in
1948. Its international headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland,
although it has regional organizations operating in Southeast
Asia, the eastern Mediterranean area, Europe, Africa, the
Americas, and the western Pacific area. According to its
constitution it is “the directing and coordinating authority on
international health work” and is responsible for helping all
peoples to attain “the highest possible levels of health.”
