This 5 page report discusses
tinea capitis, most commonly known as “ringworm.” The
predominant organism, Trichophyton tonsurans, can produce a
variety of scalp findings, ranging from mild pruritus (itching)
to obvious and severe alopecia (hair loss). Approximately three
to eight percent of American children are affected, and up to one
third of in-house contacts are asymptomatic carriers. The
condition is relatively uncommon after puberty. Bibliography
lists 6 sources.
