A 5 page paper discussing the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804 and the opening of the Oregon trail more than 30 years later. America was in expansion mode, and going West was the only possible action with which to follow the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis and Clark explored much of the Northwest territory and made friendly contact with the native groups along the way, but those groups grew fearful of consequences after only a few hundred had passed through their lands. Thomas Jefferson established government contracting for scientific experimentation with Lewis and Clark's expedition, and the opening of the Oregon Trail established an enduring population base in the far West. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
