Begley et al (1999) point out that while some people may be more biologically predisposed to violence, this tendency can be either lessened or amplified by the way in which the child is raised. The presence of such elements as abuse, guns, drugs/alcohol or inadequate parenting - according to the authors - is enough to tip some biologically inclined youth over the edge toward murderous behavior. With chemical imbalance and frontal lobe lesions two of the most applicable aspects of biological predisposition toward excessive violence, the authors point out how these already unstable individuals do not need much in the way of motivation to carry out what other people would never have the wherewithal to do. The inherent lack of emotional sensitivity is the key indicator of mental imbalance, whereby children and/or youth are devoid of the otherwise normal understanding that what they have done - or will do - is wrong.
