Since the first Neanderthal couple took to living together, the female has long been the homemaker whose sole responsibility was to perform all duties related to cleaning, cooking, childrearing and generally overseeing every aspect of home life. While things have changed over the centuries, the fundamental mindset has remained the same until very recently – the past several decades – where men are the wage earners and women maintain the household. However, as much of the twentieth century illustrates, women have since ventured out beyond the stringent boundaries established by a patriarchal society to help provide financial support for the family or seek out a satisfying profession away from home life, yet they are still expected to keep up the house, raise the kids and cook the meals with little help from men.
