A 7 page review of the stories by Edith Wharton, an author best remembered for her examination of New York society in the 1800s. Much of this work is interwoven by the themes of silence, isolation and illusion. Such is certainly the case with “The House of Mirth” and “Ethan Frome”. The characters in these works find themselves isolated from society as a whole partially because of their own ideologies but also because of circumstances which are beyond their control. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
